Canyouproofthis.com was founded in 2000 to address an obvious need for proofreading services. The English language was in a steady decline, and typos were shamelessly flourishing. At first, given our Los Angeles location, we thought we would primarily be serving screenwriters. As it turned out, businesses and individuals of every shade were in desperate need of a proof and polish.

To date, we've completed over 4,000 orders and edited more than 150,000 pages. We've served clients well beyond the borders of Los Angeles County, from Germany to Japan to New Zealand. Our clientele ranges from large corporations to small shops, from movie studios to ad agencies to nonprofits. We also work with many individuals, including novelists, students, screenwriters and job applicants.

Our business has grown every year. We began with three editors; today we work with more than 30. But we haven't gotten any less picky. All our editors are required to have at least three years of documented copyediting experience. They also must pass a rigorous copyediting test of our own design. How rigorous? Over 90 percent of applicants fail. We hire only the best, because, after all, this business is about perfection!

And that's why we keep trying to perfect our services as well.

Our ESL (English as a Second Language) Proofing package was introduced to better serve our international clients, while our staffing solutions initiative grew out of a demand for temporary on-site proofreaders and copyeditors. In 2007, we started our Priority Rush service (24-hour turnaround) and launched our sleek new Web site, vastly improving our online document submission and ordering process.

But that's just the beginning. Plans are currently under way for our biggest expansion yet: the debut of two sister sites, www.canyouwritethis.com and www.canyoutranslatethis.com. We have already begun providing copywriting services to our clients, and we are preparing to offer Spanish translation services soon. Our ultimate vision is to provide comprehensive bundled services for the written word.

No matter how big we get, though, we never want to forget our first goal: to be the dotcom you can talk to. That's why we drafted our new Mission Statement to keep us on track. We truly believe that what makes us different is our commitment to old-fashioned human interaction. No wonder we're suckers for clients who have us proof love letters. (Of course, they'll probably send them by e-mail.)
